Sheffield to introduce a living wage
I am very proud that Sheffield is introducing a Living Wage,
Paying a living wage helps not just those individuals and their families, but contributes to the overall well being of the City.
It makes sense for the local economy too, putting a little extra in people’s pockets that will help stimulate businesses across our city.
The Living Wage is all about helping those who work hard to live with dignity. I would call on all employers, whether in the private sector or the public, to seriously consider adopting it as a means of delivering fairness in tough times.
It’s not an easy decision to take, especially when services are under such pressure, but it is the kind of decision – to defend those on modest means – that’s what Labour does for the people of this City compare this with the other side of this chamber that supports a government that believes that the top priority is to cut taxes for the very richest in society.
The Living Wage is an investment which makes sound business sense.
Studies
by the Greater London Authority and Queen Mary, University of London, found clear evidence that employers have benefited across a wide range of areas after implementing the Living Wage.
70 per cent of employers felt that the Living Wage had increased consumer awareness of their organization’s commitment to be an ethical employer.
More than 80 per cent of employers believed that the Living Wage had enhanced the quality of the work of their staff.
75 per cent of employees also reported increases in work quality as a result of receiving the Living Wage.
 To quote Guy Stallard,
Head of Facilities, KPMG
“We’ve found that paying the Living Wage is a smart business move as increasing wages has reduced staff turnover and absenteeism, whilst productivity and professionalism have subsequently increased.”
A living wage helps to lift families out of poverty and reduces their reliance on public support. Employers across the public and private sectors have found that, it can make good business sense too. It can help local authorities meet their wider objectives by boosting local economies and supporting local communities.
