When you start to tinker with universal benefits it's the start of a slippery slope to removing benefits to all parts of society.
One of the measures of civilisation is the ability of that society to look after it's poor, homeless, disabled people. The current Government seems bent on not caring for these people, it seems to be hell bent on dismantling the idea that those of us who can afford to should contribute via our taxes both direct and indirect to help the whole of society.
If we continue on this path, I can see the Government bringing in private companies run the welfare system and hand out benefits to the poor and needy, they might even decide to provide accommodation for them.
Ah yes I know what this reminds me of , the work house, when the Parish Councils where responsible for providing accommodation and food for those who could not provide for themselves, is this really the future we want for this country? I think not.
